Nell Fields

President of Cowan Community Action Group, Inc.

Nell is married to Jerry Fields, a retired miner and police officer,  they have 6 grown children and 15 grandchildren. They live on a small farm at Kingscreek, KY.  Nell has been a member of the Cowan Community Action Group for over 35 year.  She volunteered for the Cowan Center where she served as  the Save the Children Federation Appalachian Area Field Office’s contact person for over 20 years, and the  Cowan Community Youth Group director. During these years the Cowan youth program became one of the most active youth leadership programs in the region.

She studied the Montessori Method of Education and worked as a Montessori teaching assistant for 6 years and is very passionate about early childhood development and Montessori.   She served her community and her country as an AmeriCORPs VISTA for two years and worked the following year as the assistant director the Save the Children Federation Appalachia Area Field Office’s  AmeriCorp Program.  She continued to work part time for the SAVE Literacy Programs at the Cowan Center until 2007, and held the position as the director of the Cowan Creek Traditional Mountain Music School.

Nell worked as the coordinator for the ‘RFK in EKY Project’.  A theatrical project, directed by the renowned artist/activists John Malpede and Henriette Browers  of LAPD in Los Angeles, CA. and  Appalshop, Inc. in Whitesburg, KY. A theatrical event that culminated in four full days of performance from September 1st thru  4th, 2004, where over 60 actors travelled 150 miles, re-enacting Senator Robert Kennedy’s 6 county tour of Eastern Kentucky and the three Senate Hearings he held here in the mountains to review the War on Poverty Programs, on February 13th and 14th, 1968.

From August 2007 til October 2008, Nell worked as a Research Assistant and successfully completed, The Rural Internet-Based Smoking Cessation Study, with Dr. Conrad Wong and Dr. Bill Stoops at University of Kentucky Department of Behavioral Science.  From 2008- 2013, she continued her employment at UK, as the Project Manager  of the “Quittin’& Preventin’ Project at Faith Moves Mountains , and successfully completed a smoking Cessation program on January 31st, 2013.

She loves to spend time with her family and grandchildren, read, garden, quilt and storytelling is becoming another passionate interest.
